metro and vre okay. one minor delay, mark 503. we're continuing to follow breaking news out of the district. crews on the scene of a fire in the 3100 block of 16 street northwest in the columbia heights neighborhood. news 4's tracee wilkins is on the scene with the latest. good morning, tracee. >> reporter: good morning, joe. this was a terrible fire. what we do know is the fire was started possibly in a hallway, considered the common area of the fifth floor. let me show you what it looks like right now. they're not ruling out the possibility ofrson but not ready to call what happened re. people were evacuated. due to that some risked terrible

injuries. eight people were transported to the hospital. five were taken to the burn center. two to george washington hospital. one child was taken to children's hospital. we're also told there was a jumper here at this fire. that person is in critical ndition at this point. one of the resints did make it out safely. >> when i opened the door, the stairway, which is right outside my do, i saw there was flames underneath the doorway. and so i realized there's a fire going on. so i ran out and tried to go down the first stairwell. that's wherthe fire was. other stairwell, i opened to go down that but the lights were out. completely dark. >> reporter: that woman did make it out safely, as you saw there. but the were plenty of folks who were injured, others who were evaluated. take a look behind me. these are other folks who made

as mourners were leaving walker memorial baptist church for the funeral of 21-year-old ashley mccray, shot to death last week in washington, another shooting happened near the cars lined up to participate in the funeral procession. a car pulled up and opened fire annan suv with three men inside. it took off down street, side-swiped two cars, hit a verizon tck and flipped. one was killed. the minister who officiated claims coates and e victims had not been inside the church for service. >> two separate incidents. and i want it to be known. >> police later served a warrant and towed away a car. one block away a man was taken into custody. however, his status is not known. this is the third shooting following a feral in the district in just the past year. back in march, nine people were shot, four killed in southeast d.c. after attending a funeral earlier that day. prosecutors say the man behind the drive-by originally planned to attack the actual funeral but later on settled shooting at the stoop where mourners gathered.

last november, 19-year-old george recallings was shot and killed after attending a funeral if northeast washington. tough immigration issues. immigration rights supporters want arlington county police to stop sharing criminal and immigration history of people in custody. it violates the rights of those here legally and undocumented. board member walter tejada said there are beliefs it will lead to distrust in the community. virginia implemented the program earlier this year. well, the u.s. senate is proping a new bipartisan bill that would hold arlington nationacemetery in fixing errors in burial records. it requires the army the right past errors and reach out to family members of those buried at arlington.

vre is rolling out two new ten-car trains today. the rail service is testing whether its new engines can handle a ten-car load. there could be one day be some faster trains to get y from here to new york in just app hour and a half, if you can believe it. amtrak unveiled its vision for a high-speed rail system. the 30 years, $117 billion proposal would drastically reduce travel times on the east coast corridor. from washington, d.c. to new york city, from 162 minutes to just 96 minutes. the rail service admits the proposal isin the vision as ary stage. right now there's no funding in

for folks inside e building to actually escape. 40 folks were actually evaluated on the scene. eight people transported to the hospital. five to the burn center. two to george washington hospital. one child was taken to children's hospital. there was a man who jumped from this building trying to escape the flames. we're told he is in critical condition right now after doing that. now, we spoke with fire officials earlier about the reason for some of these injuries were so severe in this fire. >> some of them probably self-evacuated, r through the fire. it's fight or flight for risk. you will do anything to save your life. put yourself in the citizens's shoes. you may think this is the pd. so you're going to do everything yocan to get out. >> now, there are three metrobuses on site. there may be a couple on the
